WISE Mobile Active Living Centre is proud to be offering the following presentations this coming Fall and Winter through our Indigenous Cultural Workshop series. Resilience and Renewal: The Wahta Mohawk's Journey of 1881 In this captivating presentation, Kaniehtakeron Richard Hay takes us on a historical voyage back to 1881, a pivotal year for the Wahta Mohawk community. With deep insights and a profound understanding of Mohawk history, culture, and resilience, Kaniehtakeron unveils the remarkable story of the settlement of the Mohawk community today known as Wáhta. Kaniehtakeron Richard Hay is an esteemed indigenous educator dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the rich heritage of the Haudenosaunee people, specifically through teaching the Mohawk language and offering cultural interpretation. Born into the vibrant Mohawk nation, Kaniehtakeron has always felt a deep connection to his ancestral roots, motivating him to become a passionate advocate for his people's traditions and language. Workshops are one hour in length from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm and built into our community programs.
Kairos Blanket Exercise Hosted by respected educators Gaya’dowehs Lu Ann Hill-MacDonald and Karihwakeron Tim Thompson, the Kairos Blanket Exercise is an activity that builds understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy. Workshops are two hours in length from 10:15 am to 12:15 pm and built into our community programs.
