Monthly Spotlight

May:

May is Vision Health Month and an opportunity to remind Canadians of how important vision is to our everyday lives and our health.

It’s important to schedule routine eye exams even if you feel that your vision hasn’t changed. The eye shows more about your health than you think! Eye exams can detect symptoms of serious medical conditions such as: stroke, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, some cancers, brain injuries, and neurological conditions that are often first detected through a comprehensive eye exam. Optometrists diagnose, treat and help prevent diseases and disorders affecting the visual system (the eye and related structures). There are a lot of conditions that can be detected at an eye exam, even before obvious symptoms start to show. These include: Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Diabetic Retinopathy, Computer Vision Syndrome (aka Digital Eye Strain), Presbyopia, Dry Eye, Glaucoma.  Early detection can help reduce the risk of vision loss and other complications.

Taking preventative measures to protect your vision:

  • Wear polarized sunglasses or a broad-brimmed hat to avoid sunlight exposure
  • Take breaks from screens including computers, cell phones, digital ereaders and television to reduce digital eye strain.
  • Book an appointment with an optometrist and schedule routine eye exams.
  • Learn more at the Canadian Association of Optometrists

     Toll-free: 888-263-4676     email: info@opto.ca      website: https://opto.ca/

 Get WISE about your eyes!

June

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is held annually on June 15. It focuses our attention on the need for all of us, to take responsibility in preventing elder abuse. This day is an opportunity to raise awareness of elder abuse and neglect of older persons, by sharing information about the facts of elder abuse, the rights of older persons and promote resources and services to support seniors’ safety and well-being. This years theme is Be Bold: Age with Attitude.

How to support yourself:

Be Bold: Age with Attitude: know your rights, allow yourself time to make informed decisions, check the facts, use reputable resources and services, ensure you plan ahead, and establish trustworthy decision makers and POAs when applicable.

 How to support others:

  • Visit and check on friends, family, and neighbours.
  • Keep connected with your community.
  • Know the signs of elder abuse.
  • Know what to do if you suspect elder abuse or neglect.

Together, we can empower older adults and build safer communities!

 Loaner Programs
The Laptop Loaner Program is a programs that allow you to borrow a device to participate in virtual programs, continue education, and stay connected with friends and family.  The Laptop Loaner Program will require your own internet services.  We want our participants to eliminate barriers to stay connected.

Urban Pole Loaner Program and Snowshoe Loaner Program allow participants to borrow a set of poles for the duration of the season(s).  You can use the fitness equipment for personal use or engage in other social and recreational programs in your community.

FitBits may be leant out with fitness equipment depending on availability.  FitBits do require access to a tablet or smartphone to set up the device. They have the benefits of tracking physical activity, water intake, food diary, and monitoring heart rates, BPM, and sleep patterns.

Please note that all loaners are pending availability and the duration of loaning equipment will be based on program needs and priorities.  To discuss our loaner programs in further details, please contact Seniors Programs for more information.
