Taking Action on Climate Change
Muskoka’s climate is changing, and the District of Muskoka is taking action to reduce emissions, protect our natural environment, and prepare for climate impacts. The Muskoka Climate Change Action Plan (MCCAP) is the District’s roadmap to reducing corporate greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and building a more climate-resilient Muskoka.

What is the MCCAP?
The MCCAP was created in 2020 with input from all District departments. It identifies 112 actions that guide Muskoka’s efforts in:
- Cutting emissions from municipal buildings, fleet, and operations
- Improving energy efficiency in District-owned facilities
- Supporting green infrastructure and climate-resilient communities
- Protecting lakes, forests, and ecosystems
- Engaging the community in climate action
These actions are organized into five key pillars:
- Natural Environment – Protecting lakes, forests, and biodiversity
- Governance – Integrating climate action into policies and decision-making
- Economy – Encouraging sustainable business and investment
- Infrastructure – Reducing emissions from transportation, buildings, and waste
- Community – Educating and engaging residents in climate solutions
Our Progress So Far
The District is already making progress on its climate goals. To date, we have 43 actions completed with 47 more in progress. Some of our accomplishments include:
- $1M Climate Reserve Fund established to accelerate local climate action
- Green Development Standards in progress to support sustainable building practices
- Expanded water quality monitoring to protect Muskoka’s lakes
- In April of 2024, the Community Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan was adopted and approved by Muskoka District Council
What Does This Mean for You?
While the MCCAP focuses on municipal operations, its impacts benefit everyone in Muskoka.
