Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions are the harmful gases emitted into our atmosphere from activities such as burning fossil fuels (like gas or diesel) in a vehicle, and these gases are causing climate change. In Muskoka, based on the 2018 GHG inventory, 74% of all GHG emissions in Muskoka are caused by tailpipe emissions of burning fossil fuels in vehicles. In order to reduce Muskoka’s GHG emissions to reduce the impacts of climate change, we need to use more sustainable forms of transportation.
In the beautiful summer months of Muskoka, using an active method of transportation such as walking or biking (if you are able) is a great way to reduce your GHG emissions and carbon footprint. The District of Muskoka is challenging our residents and visitors to do your best to drive less this summer and explore Muskoka by foot or bike! Not only is active transportation a great way to help the environment but it is also a great way to improve your health and spend time in Muskoka’s beautiful natural environment.
Another way to reduce your GHG emissions is by carpooling with a friend, colleague or neighbour to work, or any event where you are unable to walk or bike. Carpooling will immediately cut your GHG emissions in half if you are carpooling with someone else that would normally take their own private vehicle. Ask around at your work, or in your personal life to see if anyone you know might be a suitable carpool buddy and try to start carpooling even just once a week for starters!
The last sustainable method of transportation available in Muskoka is public transit! There are many public transit routes available and reliable in Muskoka. Options include the Corridor 11 Bus Route which travels from Huntsville to Orillia, and makes stops in Port Sydney, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Kilworthy and Washago. Additionally, both Bracebridge and Huntsville have public transit systems which can help people/residents get around within the towns. The District facilitates the Rural and Community Connection (RCC) bus service which connects Muskoka communities east and west while providing timed connections to other transportation networks within and beyond Muskoka. If you are a visitor to Muskoka from elsewhere in Ontario, there are also many public transit options such as the Ontario Northlander Bus which operates services along Highway 400 and Highway 11 and can help get you to Muskoka in a more sustainable way. Try checking out these public transit programs and learning more about how you can take advantage of these great public transportation options!
