Acton Island Bridge needs improvements to extend its service life and minimize future maintenance costs. The bridge, built around 1979 and the only access to Acton Island, a community with over 300 cottages and full-time residences, is a single-lane structure with a width of 4.9 meters between curbs and an overall length of approximately 102 meters. The bridge inspection program has identified deterioration in the exposed concrete deck, including spalling and delamination, as well as issues with the approach road asphalt wearing surface and the concrete barrier end walls with stone veneer. Additionally, several bridge bearings are at the end of their service life and need to be replaced, and the expansion joints are at the end of their service life and also need to be replaced.
Construction on the bridge is estimated to take 6.5 months and will involve maintaining a narrow (2.8 meters) single lane for vehicular traffic. However, large vehicles cannot pass through the construction zone without coordinating to move temporary barriers. Pedestrian access through the construction zone on the existing bridge is not possible, but a temporary pedestrian bridge could be considered at additional cost if necessary. Certain work items will require short-term full closures of the road to vehicle traffic, but these closures can be scheduled to minimize extended closure durations.
Overall, we are taking action on Acton Island by completing the rehabilitation work required to ensure that the bridge remains safe and reliable for the benefit of the community it serves.
