November 17, 2021 (Bracebridge, ON) - Join the District's Geographic Information System (GIS) team as they celebrate World GIS Day today with the launch of the LiDAR Discovery StoryMap – a new addition to the Muskoka GeoHub.
LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging, which is a type of surveying that involves scanning the ground with a laser mounted to a plane. The new interactive StoryMap allows users to explore high-resolution ground elevation data. The three-dimensional models of the land generated from the data will help us better understand Muskoka's environment including determining potential water elevations during flood events.
"Muskoka is a unique place with a diverse landscape. The very accurate LiDAR data presents many opportunities for the Muskoka community since this information can be used for so many applications such as development policy and emergency response" said Graham Good, Manager of Geomatics at the District of Muskoka. "The Geomatics team is proud to present this StoryMap, and we are excited for the public to be able to access this new data.
In 2018 one-third of the District was included in initial LiDAR surveying to collect ground elevation data for the Muskoka Floodplain Mapping Project. Almost half of the District will be surveyed after more LiDAR surveying is completed next year.
