Friday, June 23, 2023 (Muskoka, ON) – As a leader in the Province, Muskoka’s Community Paramedicine Program is revolutionizing the way primary care is delivered. Muskoka Community Paramedics performs approximately 1,500 home and virtual visits annually. The Community Paramedic program covers the entirety of the District of Muskoka. From Honey Harbour to Lake of Bays and Severn Bridge to North Huntsville, providing healthcare solutions to all who need them. By providing care in patients’ homes and utilizing technology for virtual consultations, they offer convenient healthcare solutions tailored to individual needs.

What makes the Community Paramedicine Program unique?

  • Extended Service Hours: Community Paramedics operate 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. This ensures patients receive the care they require, even on weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Expanded Scope of Practice: Community Paramedics undergo specialized training and possess an expanded scope of practice to deliver primary care services to residents who would otherwise have to travel to clinics or hospitals. Community Paramedics provide point-of-care bloodwork, urinalysis, catheter care, and specialized wound care.
  • Addressing Local Needs: Community Paramedics work closely with all Family Health Team Physicians and Nurse Practitioners in the District to support the unique needs of residents in Muskoka. Community Paramedics care for those on or at risk of being on the Long-term Care waitlist, individuals transitioning from Alternate Level of Care (ALC) to their homes, and those at high risk of readmission to a hospital.
  • Reduced Trips to the Emergency Department: The work of Community Paramedics has resulted in a sixty percent (60%) reduction in 911 calls for our rostered patients. Community Paramedic care improves patient well-being and has reduced the need for patients to go to emergency departments for care.

How do people access the program?

There are two ways people can access the program:

  1. Speak with your healthcare provider to obtain a referral to the Muskoka Community Paramedic program.
  2. Front-line Paramedics may also refer people after a 911 response. During an emergency response, Paramedics may determine that a patient could benefit from support from the Community Paramedic Program and will complete a referral. This allows front-line Paramedics and Community Paramedics to work collaboratively to ensure the best possible outcomes for the people they serve.
