The idea behind No Mow May is to leave your lawn alone in May – just don’t mow your lawn, sounds simple right? This allows flowers on your lawn to bloom and feed hungry insects and other pollinators that are emerging from hibernation when other flowers are scarce in the early spring season.
This initiative is about as easy as can be – just don’t mow your lawn for 1 month! Not only does this help the pollinators, but if you have a gas-powered lawn mower, this initiative reduces your Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, since you won’t be running your lawn mower for a month!
Many communities in Ontario including Gravenhurst, Kingston, East Gwillimbury, Cornwall, Toronto, Sudbury, and many other Canadian and international communities are participating in No Mow May and encouraging their citizens to leave their lawns natural until June.
This is the first step in protecting our pollinator populations, the bees need our help! As mentioned in the April Climate Corner Newsletter, creating pollinator gardens, and planting native species is another great thing you can do at home to help protect the biodiversity of Muskoka!
