Divert waste from our landfills by giving your old items a new life through donation, or by purchasing your items from thrift stores / reuse programs! One of the best ways to reduce your waste and carbon footprint is through acquiring your items through reuse programs, or by donating your items to a reuse program to extend the life of your items.

To shop sustainably, the best option is to thrift shop! There are many thrift stores in Muskoka that can be great places to find affordable, gently used clothing, or household items.

If you are looking for a place to drop off or purchase gently used items such as clothing, appliances, furniture, toys, etc. check out the following centers, as well as other local grass-roots organizations and businesses working to support the same mission!

  • Diabetes Canada Textile bins accept donations of accessories, bags, clothing, curtains, general household textiles, shoes, boots, sleeping bags.
  • Habitat for Humanity ReStore accept donations and sell the following items: appliances, cabinets, décor items, doors, windows, lighting/plumbing items, upholstered/wooden/metal furniture, flooring, area rugs, lumber, renovation materials, hardware and tools. You can drop off items, schedule a pick-up or book a salvage for large renovations. The ReStores in Huntsville and Bracebridge sell these items to the public and can be a great way to purchase affordable household items and ultimately reduce the amount of waste that we send to our landfills in Muskoka.
  • Salvation Army thrift stores in Bracebridge, Gravenhurst and Huntsville accept donations and sell the following items: accessories, antiques, collectibles, clothing, computers, electronics, houseware, media/books, seasonal items, textiles and toys. These thrift stores are great for finding affordable clothing and items for purchase as well!
  • Use online communities such as Trash Nothing or FreeCycle to post your reusable items and match up with other who may happen to be searching for the same item, keeping them out of the 'trash'.
  • Animal shelters/rescues often accept blankets and towels, but it is best to reach out directly to the shelters.

What items can you donate instead of throwing away? Is there anything on your wish list that you could find in a reuse program? Act locally to meet our waste diversion goal!
