bala creek bridge with guiderail sidewalks and town of bala in background

Beginning the week of April 26, 2021, work is planned to improve the Bala Creek Bridge on Muskoka Road 169 near River Street (locally known as the Mill Stream Bridge) in the Bala community.

Single-lane traffic will be in place until the end of June as we repair the bridge structure, repave the driving surface and widen the sidewalks.

What’s Happening?

Bridges are important structures that connect our communities. Regular maintenance and upgrades prevent problems, unplanned bridge closures and other emergencies. This bridge is concrete and needs structural repairs so we can keep traffic moving.

Work planned on the Bala Bridge includes:

  • repairs and replacement of concrete on the bridge structure
  • repaving with new asphalt for a smooth driving surface
  • improving pedestrian and motorist safety with new guiderails
  • making the pedestrian experience better by widening the sidewalks and improving safety to meet accessibility requirements

Traffic Impacts - What You Need To Know

We’ve scheduled this work so it gets done quickly and with minimal disruption to traffic. We’re working closely with crews to make sure traffic continues to flow across the bridge - please plan for increased delays as single-lane closures will be in place.

Starting April 26, 2021 until the end of June:

  • there will be no full road/bridge closures
  • single lane traffic maintained with signals 24/7 – crews will monitor signal timing and make adjustments based on traffic flows
  • access to businesses on either side of the bridge will be maintained
  • pedestrian access will be maintained
  • the bridge will be fully open to two-lane traffic for the May long weekend

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while bridge upgrades are completed.
