October 23, 2024 (Muskoka, ON) – An important project is underway in the Township of Muskoka Lakes as the District of Muskoka begins the long-anticipated transformation of the Port Carling Pavilion and docks this winter.
This project includes key upgrades to improve accessibility and safety, all while preserving the familiar charm that makes the Pavilion and docks cherished community landmarks. A full reconstruction is planned to ensure it remains recognizable to those with fond memories, while offering new opportunities for future experiences to be enjoyed.
By scheduling construction this winter, we will reduce inconveniences for boaters, avoid impacts on Lock operations, and minimize disruptions during the busy summer months. The Pavilion and docks are scheduled to reopen in Spring 2025.
Preserving Charm, Enhancing Safety
We’re rebuilding the Port Carling Pavilion and docks to keep the same familiar look, but with safer, stronger structures and updated features.
- Accessibility - improving ramps and pathways will ensure the Pavilion is accessible for more community members to experience.
- Structural Upgrades - reinforced structural supports and modern safety upgrades will ensure the Pavilion offers a safe environment, that is built to last .
- Dock Reconstruction – new docks will have reinforced supports to improve safety and withstand heavy use.
- Modern Lighting – dark-sky compliant lighting will be installed to improve nighttime visibility, while reducing light pollution.
Construction is set to start this Fall, with plans to reopen in time for the 2025 boating season. Pedestrian access to the boardwalk and locks will remain open, and vehicular access on Lock Street will be restricted to emergency vehicles only.
Once complete, the Port Carling Pavilion and docks will offer a special blend of old and new - a familiar landmark, deeply connected to the community, but with modern improvements that enhance safety and accessibility. Owned by the District of Muskoka and located at the northeast corner of the Port Carling Locks, the Pavilion and docks are a part of our community’s identity. This landmark has served as a meeting place, a hub for activities and public events, and it’s deeply connected to our communities through shared experiences.
