Road Safety: Speed Limit Reviews on District Roads

Starting in July 2025, speed limits on District roads are reviewed across Muskoka, one municipality at a time, over a six-year cycle until all have been reviewed.

Reviews follow Canadian transportation engineering standards. Some speed limits may change, while others may stay the same.

During a review, staff look at things like:

road design
traffic speeds and volumes
surrounding land uses
safety and collision history
pedestrian and cycling activity

These factors help determine whether the posted speed limit should stay the same or change.

Any changes must be approved by Committee and Council.

Bracebridge - Study Complete

Study conducted: Fall 2025

Committee report: July 2026 EPW Committee

The changes were approved on August 20, 2026, and will take effect once new speed limit signs are installed.

The following speed limit changes were approved:

Muskoka Road 20 (Doe Lake Road): The speed limit will increase from 60 km/h to 70 km/hbetween UffingtonRoadandHousey’s RapidsRoad.
Muskoka Road 37 (Manitoba Street): The speed limit will decrease from 50 km/h to 40 km/h between Monck Roadand Ecclestone Drive.
Muskoka Road 42 (Taylor Road): The speed limit will decrease from 50 km/h to 30 km/h between Front Street and Manitoba Street.

All other speed limits reviewed on District roads in Bracebridge remain unchanged.

Georgian Bay - Under Review

A speed limit review for Georgian Bay is underway. Recommendations will be brought to the Engineering and Public Works Committee in 2027.

Can residents request a speed limit review?

Yes. Residents can request a speed limit review through their local Council or Committee. If a road has been reviewed within the past five years, it will generally not be reassessed unless conditions change.
