Icy road with the words Significant Weather Event

Saturday, Mar. 29, 2025 (Muskoka, ON) – The District has declared a Significant Weather Event for all District roads throughout Muskoka effective immediately. The declaration is due to a Freezing Rain Warning issued by Environment Canada that forecasts a major ice storm that will impact road maintenance operations across the District. Significant ice accretion (buildup) is expected over the course of the weekend.

During this Significant Weather Event, residents are advised to avoid all unnecessary travel on District roads, until further notice.

What does declaring a Significant Weather Event mean?

The District follows strict winter maintenance timelines, but during a Significant Weather Event, road maintenance activities may take longer due to severe conditions. These events are declared to keep the community informed and safe, with crews monitoring weather and road conditions 24/7 and adjusting operations as needed.

This declaration applies to all District roads in Muskoka, and each of our partnering Area Municipalities (Towns and Townships) may declare a Significant Weather Event for their roads as well. Declaring a Significant Weather Event for all District roads allows staff and resources from across the District to be called in to support the crews in communities most impacted.

“Freezing rain and ice buildup make for challenging road conditions. It is essential for residents to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel,” said James Steele, Commissioner of Engineering and Public Works. “Keeping vehicles off the roads helps ensure everyone’s safety and allows our crews to respond more quickly and effectively.”
