Forest Health

Forests provide benefits to everyone. Besides contributing to the economy through forest products such as lumber, fuel, wood and maple syrup, forests provide various air and water benefits, habitat for a wide range of wildlife and plant species, weather moderation, soil retention and a backdrop for many recreational and tourism activities. They also create attractive communities and contribute to various human health benefits and quality of life.

Forest Health Education

The District of Muskoka has developed a Forest Health Program to promote forest health in Muskoka. This includes education and extension for landowners. It is Council’s hope that this program will be of assistance to all landowners who wish to explore management options for their forests or as they consider their overall objectives for their property.

For information on conducting forestry operations on your property, please click on the following links: A Landowner’s Guide to Selling Standing Timber and A Landowners’ Guide to Careful Logging.

These brochures have been produced by the Ontario Woodlot Association. Both of these documents include important information that all landowners who are considering harvesting and/or selling trees should be aware of as well as information on where you can find additional resources if you would like to learn more. The booklets associated with these brochures are also available free of charge at the District of Muskoka offices.

In addition to this information, Tony Armstrong has been retained as the Forest Health Consultant who is available to provide advice to landowners upon request.

Should you wish to obtain more information about Muskoka’s Forest Health Program, receive copies of the booklets, or if you would like to set up a meeting with the Forest Health Technician, please call Melissa Halford (705) 645-2100 ext. 288.  Tony Armstrong can also be contacted directly at (705) 645-9352 or 788-4905.
